I have been part of the MEI family for over a decade now, as both a student and teacher. While it’s always tough to pinpoint a highlight, my experience on the Tanzania program was something very special. The role of the teacher has changed over the years, and my job is more about facilitation and allowing students to make their own informed decisions about the world and the issues that surround them. We’re living in a time where a World Issues course feels so urgent and relevant, and to be able to talk with students about globalization, activism, sustainability, or immigration, surrounded by the diverse and incredible landscape of Tanzania, is something I will always remember.

Program Itinerary

Preparation and Coursework

Early May
To ease into the program, students have access to the course website where reading lists are posted. Course preparation is spread out over three weeks: our first two-week preparation session begins in early May, focusing on novel studies; the second one-week session starts in late June, focusing on completing research and small assignments. These online sessions are designed to connect students with their teachers and classmates, to help complete short tasks, and to alleviate the workload during the summer. Students are required to complete all foundation work before leaving to ensure they are ready to hit the ground running while overseas.

Departure from Toronto

Days 1–2
Our journey begins in Toronto, where students and teachers gather and get to know one another while they settle into the rhythm of the program. In Toronto, students listen to guest speakers and then spend the day working on an assignment that takes them to the city in groups and sees them filming their first assignment. This time in Toronto inspires and prepares the group for the adventure that awaits when we travel abroad.
Foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro
Days 2–17
After a long flight, we land in Kilimanjaro and reside on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, where students take to the hills to explore the region’s range of landscapes. Students quickly learn that this is an ideal location to examine the UN’s Millennium Development Goals and issues of sustain ability and foreign aid. Here, students explore village life and set to work on individual service projects with an emphasis on meaningful engagement. Our ongoing group service project takes teachers and students camping in Kirua where they work with the village’s youth centre.
Safari
Days 17–20
After exploring the natural beauty of rural Africa, students travel to the picturesque outskirts of Moshi in northeast Tanzania. There, students study the economic, social and political issues that challenge Tanzanians, and the larger continent of Africa. Students are given a window into the life of the Maasai, in order to expand their own perspectives on community building and leadership.
Moshi
Days 20–26
After exploring the natural beauty of rural Africa, students travel to the picturesque outskirts of Moshi in northeast Tanzania. There, students study the economic, social and political issues that challenge Tanzanians, and the larger continent of Africa. Students are given the opportunity to have a window into the life of the Maasai, to expand their own perspectives on community building and leadership.

Pangani

Days 26–35

The final leg of the African journey takes students to the banks of the Pangani river, an ideal location for students to decompress and prepare for their summative tasks. Students also have the opportunity to go on snorkelling and fishing expeditions, as they reflect on their experiences. Here, students engage in Individual Study Unit interviews with their teachers, write final exams and prepare for their journey home.
